How to Protect and Maintain Tarpaulins During Heavy Rain and Typhoon Season

Tarpaulins are useful for emergency weather protection, but severe rain and wind can exceed the capacity of any temporary sheet. Safe installation, drainage and regular inspection are as important as material choice. Never enter an unsafe area or attempt to adjust a large cover during dangerous weather.

Select the right cover before installation

Use a material and GSM appropriate for the expected exposure. Light PE may suit short-term protection in sheltered conditions. Heavy-duty PE or PVC is generally better for larger areas, repeated handling and stronger weather. Fire-retardant or anti-static requirements must be specified separately.

Prevent water pooling

A flat tarpaulin can collect a large mass of rainwater. Even a shallow pool creates significant load and may stretch the fabric, damage eyelets or collapse the supporting structure. Install the cover with a clear slope and keep drainage paths open.

Do not create low points between ropes or supports. Check that the discharge area will not flood entrances, electrical equipment or neighbouring property.

Reduce wind damage

Wind entering beneath an edge can lift the cover like a sail. Secure every side, distribute tension across multiple fixing points and minimise loose fabric. Reinforced hems and closer eyelet spacing may help, but the supporting structure and fixing hardware must also be strong enough.

Never tie a cover to an unstable object. Avoid fastening directly against sharp edges that can cut the material when it moves.

Inspect before severe weather

  • Check every eyelet, rope, strap and anchor.
  • Look for small cuts, worn hems and loose seams.
  • Remove objects that could puncture the fabric.
  • Confirm the slope and drainage route.
  • Ensure the cover cannot contact hot equipment.
  • Remove or professionally secure large covers if conditions may exceed the installation design.

Cleaning after heavy rain

Remove dirt using clean water, a soft brush and a mild cleaning solution suitable for the material. Avoid aggressive solvents unless the manufacturer confirms compatibility. Rinse thoroughly and allow both sides to dry before folding.

Prevent mould and odour

Humidity trapped in a folded cover can encourage mould and staining. Store tarpaulins only when clean and fully dry. Choose a ventilated area away from direct sunlight, chemicals, rodents and sharp tools.

Fold and store correctly

Do not drag the cover over rough concrete. Fold it on a clean surface and avoid placing heavy objects on the bundle. Large covers can be rolled around a smooth core to reduce hard creases. Label custom sections so installation teams can identify them quickly.

Repair small damage early

A small cut can grow rapidly in wind. Stop using the cover if the damage affects a lifting point or creates an unsafe condition. Repair methods depend on PE, PVC or canvas construction. PVC patches are commonly welded; canvas may be stitched and treated; PE repair depends on the sheet grade.

Know when replacement is safer

Replace a cover when the fabric has become brittle, coating is separating, multiple eyelets have pulled out, seams are failing or repairs no longer hold. Sunlight, heat, abrasion and chemical exposure can reduce strength even when damage is not immediately obvious.
