How to choose tarpaulin for Philippine weather.
Start with the application—not only the price
The Philippines has a demanding tropical climate. A cover may face heavy rain, strong UV exposure, humidity, wind-driven debris and repeated folding or handling. The cheapest sheet can be suitable for a short temporary job, but an incorrectly specified cover often fails early because the material, seams, fastening points or dimensions do not match the application.
Before choosing a tarpaulin, identify what it must protect, how long it will stay outdoors, how frequently it will be moved, and how it will be secured. These questions narrow the choice between PE, PVC and canvas.
PE tarpaulin: lightweight and economical
Laminated polyethylene tarpaulin is a practical general-purpose option. It is lightweight, waterproof, foldable and easy to move. PE is commonly used for construction materials, temporary roofing, farm supplies, household protection, camping and short-term outdoor storage.
Lighter grades are convenient but may not tolerate constant wind movement or repeated dragging. Heavier PE grades, reinforced edges and correctly spaced eyelets improve performance. Avoid pulling ropes so tightly that the eyelets tear away from the fabric.
PVC tarpaulin: durable for demanding work
PVC-coated polyester fabric is normally selected for truck covers, machinery, warehouse curtains, industrial partitions, pond liners and custom covers that require stronger seams and repeated handling. PVC can be high-frequency welded, producing strong panel joins and detailed custom fabrication.
Available weights range from medium-duty covers to very heavy industrial grades. Higher GSM is not automatically better for every task: the cover becomes heavier and more difficult to handle. Choose a weight that balances strength, flexibility, installation and budget.
Canvas: breathable protection
Canvas is a woven material valued for breathability. It can reduce trapped moisture and condensation around equipment or cargo. Treated canvas may provide water resistance, but it should not be assumed to perform like welded PVC in continuous heavy rain.
Canvas is useful in workshops, transport and storage applications where airflow matters. Confirm the fabric weight, treatment, colour and expected outdoor exposure before ordering.
Five details that prevent early failure
- Correct finished size: include overlap and the full height of three-dimensional equipment.
- Reinforced edges: hems and corner patches distribute tension around fixing points.
- Proper eyelet spacing: closer spacing may be necessary in exposed areas, but the structure and rope system must also be suitable.
- Controlled drainage: avoid flat areas where rainwater can collect and overload the cover.
- Reduced flapping: loose fabric repeatedly moving in wind can damage coatings, seams and eyelets.
A simple selection summary
Choose PE for economical temporary and general-purpose weather protection. Choose fabricated PVC for heavy-duty, repeated-use and custom industrial covers. Choose canvas when breathability is more important than complete waterproofing. For fire-retardant requirements, request the necessary standard and certificate before production.
When in doubt, send photographs, dimensions, expected exposure and the required service period. A good supplier should explain the trade-offs rather than recommending the heaviest material for every job.
