Tarpaulin GSM Guide for Philippine Buyers: PE, PVC and Canvas Explained

Choosing tarpaulin by colour or thickness alone can lead to early tearing, difficult handling or unnecessary cost. Philippine projects must account for tropical rain, strong sunlight, wind, repeated folding and the load placed on eyelets and seams. This practical guide explains how GSM, material and fabrication work together so buyers can specify a cover that fits its real job.

What does GSM mean in tarpaulin?

GSM means grams per square metre. It measures how much one square metre of material weighs. Within the same material family, a higher GSM usually gives the sheet more body and may improve resistance to tearing and repeated handling. However, GSM is not a complete quality rating.

Two covers with the same GSM can perform differently because of the base weave, coating, UV treatment, seam construction and reinforcement. Eyelet spacing also matters: a strong sheet can still fail if wind loads are concentrated on a few weak fixing points. Compare GSM only after confirming that the material, finish and fabrication suit the application.

PE tarpaulin: lightweight and economical

Polyethylene tarpaulin is a practical choice when low weight, easy handling and economical rain protection are priorities. Common project grades include approximately 120, 150, 180, 200 and 250 GSM.

120–150 GSM PE is best for temporary protection, light storage, occasional use and jobs where workers must move the sheet frequently. It should be kept away from sharp corners and severe wind exposure.

180–250 GSM PE provides more body for construction materials, agricultural protection, outdoor storage and selected transport covers. In exposed areas, the cover still needs adequate support, reinforced fixing points and close tie spacing. Do not stretch PE excessively; controlled tension is safer than pulling the sheet drum-tight.

PVC tarpaulin: built for demanding, repeated use

PVC-coated tarpaulin is commonly selected for truck covers, machinery covers, industrial partitions, temporary enclosures, pool covers and large custom sheets. It is well suited to welded seams, shaped fabrication and reinforced edges.

300–500 GSM PVC can serve medium-duty covers, partitions and general waterproof protection. 550–700 GSM PVC is often considered for heavy outdoor covers, transport and fabrication requiring stronger welded seams. 750–900 GSM PVC suits selected industrial work, frequent handling and abrasive conditions, but the greater weight must be considered during lifting and installation.

Standard PVC and fire-retardant PVC are not interchangeable. If a project requires fire-retardant or anti-static performance, state it before ordering and request the applicable documentation for the exact material offered. Never assume certification from colour, thickness or GSM.

Canvas tarpaulin: breathable textile protection

Canvas is useful where a breathable woven cover and abrasion resistance are preferred. Cotton canvas may be waxed or proofed for improved water resistance and is often specified by ounce weight, such as 18 oz or 25 oz.

Canvas is not identical to a fully waterproof PVC sheet. Buyers should clarify whether they need breathability, water resistance, full waterproofing or a special treatment. After use, damp canvas should be dried before folding to reduce mildew, odour and fabric deterioration.

Match the material to Philippine conditions

Rain: Waterproof material alone is not enough. Large covers require slope and drainage so water cannot collect in unsupported pockets.

Sun: Long outdoor exposure makes UV resistance important. Ask about the intended outdoor grade instead of relying only on colour.

Wind: Flapping places repeated shock loads on hems and eyelets. Use enough fixing points, secure the cover evenly and inspect ties after strong weather.

Abrasion: Pad sharp metal edges, rough concrete and protruding corners. Reinforcement should be added where the cover contacts equipment or where straps apply concentrated force.

Sizing, seams and fixing details

Confirm whether the quotation refers to nominal cut size or expected finished size. Folded hems and joined panels can affect final dimensions, especially on large custom covers. Closely fitted equipment covers need length, width, height and the position of projections, openings or access flaps.

For tied covers, include enough overlap for fastening. State the required eyelet interval, rope in the hem, webbing, reinforced corners, buckles or straps. Wide eyelet spacing may reduce price but can increase stress at each fixing point. For vehicles and moving loads, the fastening plan is just as important as the sheet specification.

A practical quotation checklist

  • Finished length and width, plus height for fitted covers
  • Quantity, application and expected frequency of use
  • Preferred PE, PVC or canvas grade and GSM or ounce weight
  • Colour, eyelet interval and edge reinforcement
  • Welded or stitched seams, rope, webbing, straps or buckles
  • Photos or drawings for machinery and custom-shaped covers
  • Delivery city or port in the Philippines
  • Any required test report, packing method or labelling

Care and maintenance after purchase

Clean loose dirt before folding and avoid storing any cover while wet. Repair small punctures before they enlarge, and replace damaged ropes or ties promptly. During installation, distribute tension evenly instead of pulling from one corner. Inspect outdoor covers after severe weather, paying special attention to eyelets, welded seams and abrasion points.
