Choosing between PE and PVC tarpaulin is easier when the decision begins with the job rather than the product name. Both materials can provide waterproof protection, but their weight, handling, fabrication and expected service conditions are different. In the Philippines, heavy rain, high humidity, intense sunlight and strong seasonal winds make correct specification especially important.
What is PE tarpaulin?
PE tarpaulin is normally made from woven polyethylene with a laminated waterproof surface. It is light, foldable and economical. Common weights include 120, 150, 180, 200 and 250 GSM. Lighter grades suit short-term covering and general protection, while heavier PE options provide better strength for construction, agriculture and outdoor storage.
Because PE is easy to transport and install, it is commonly used for ground sheets, temporary roofs, building materials, farm supplies, event protection and household applications. It is also practical where covers must be moved frequently but are not subjected to severe abrasion.
What is PVC tarpaulin?
PVC tarpaulin is a coated polyester fabric designed for more demanding use. Common specifications range from approximately 300 to 1000 GSM. PVC can be joined by high-frequency welding, allowing large covers, curtains and shaped products to be fabricated with strong waterproof seams.
Typical applications include truck covers, machinery covers, warehouse partitions, industrial curtains, long-term outdoor protection and customised covers that are installed and removed repeatedly. Fire-retardant and anti-static variants may be available for projects that require specialised performance.
Key differences between PE and PVC
Weight and handling
PE is generally lighter and simpler for one or two people to handle. PVC is heavier, especially at higher GSM, but the additional weight can provide stability and durability for repeated commercial use.
Service life
Service life depends on UV exposure, wind movement, installation tension, abrasion and storage. A well-specified PVC cover is usually preferred for frequent handling or longer-term use. PE is often the more economical option for temporary or seasonal protection.
Fabrication
PE construction may use heat sealing or stitching depending on the material. PVC panels are commonly high-frequency welded. Both can include reinforced hems, eyelets, rope edging and strengthened corners.
Cost
PE normally has the lower initial cost. PVC costs more but may provide better value when the cover will be used repeatedly or needs custom detailing. The cheapest material is not always the lowest-cost option over the full life of the cover.
Which material suits common applications?
- Temporary construction cover: PE is often sufficient when it is securely fixed and protected from sharp edges.
- Truck or trailer cover: PVC is commonly chosen for repeated handling, tension and abrasion.
- Agricultural ground sheet: PE provides economical waterproof separation.
- Machinery cover: PVC suits heavy-duty weather protection; canvas may be considered when breathability is important.
- Warehouse divider: PVC offers a strong, washable surface and can be fabricated with welded joins.
- Fire-sensitive work area: Request a fire-retardant specification and supporting certificate rather than assuming every PVC sheet is fire retardant.
Do not select by GSM alone
GSM is the material weight per square metre, not a complete quality rating. Coating, base fabric, seam construction, reinforcement and fixing method all affect performance. A lighter material installed correctly can outperform a heavy sheet that flaps, rubs against sharp edges or collects water.

Provide the finished dimensions, quantity, delivery city, application, preferred material, GSM, colour, eyelet spacing and required date. Include photographs or a sketch for shaped covers. If certification is mandatory, state the exact standard before production.
